Who among us does not love to read or hear a good story? That is a foundational core of our humanity. Before the written word, the knowledge of family and cultural history was conveyed verbally. A story was told and passed down through the generations. On the nascent American frontier Sunday meeting was often the only time the scattered local population could gather and not only hear the word of God but also share stories of the happenings in their lives. In his first fictional work, Tom Bonine's Rocking Chair Tales harkens back to those days through ten short stories that touch on themes we can all relate to: conflict, courage, love, war's devastating aftermath, and the impact of strong role models are all told through tales of the supernatural, and the American frontier.
"Somewhere it is a late summer evening. The scent of freshly cut hay is in the air. The work of the day is done. The moon is on the rise. Step up on the front porch. Sit a spell. Share some coffee. The man in the old rocking chair has a story to tell you."
Following the death of his oldest son, Tom Bonine wrote poems to aid in his grief work and healing. His writing, however, became much more. The eighty-four poems in this collection unfolds into introspective comments on childhood, nature, history, family, love and life.
The mystery, eerriness, and intenseness of thirteen chalk drawings begged for a narrative that would draw one into a surreal world laced with the reality of life. The artist, Maia Erbes, opened the door. The poet, Tom Bonine, crossed the threshold. Their world is open to you, the reader, to be immersed in, to discover the hidden story behind the captivating art contained within.
All four of Tom Bonine's grandkids were invited to share their world through their own ideas, writings, and observations. Grandad turned some into poetry, with each stanza and line conveying the child's own written ideas. However, they also wrote their own poems and essays as well. This is a delightful collection spawned from the observations of four young kids, and the world around them...their world.
